This stone-walled property, built in 1886 by a prominent local merchant, served as Calistoga’s main hospital from 1919 to 1946 before being eventually shut down by the state because it fell into disrepair. A San Francisco–based interior designer–real estate developer couple, Dina and Richard Dwyer, purchased the property in 2015 and turned it around to become a polished Old World glamor hotel (technically billed as a bed and breakfast since it will have six rooms) that opens this July. “I wanted the property to have a sense of place and time,” says Dina Dwyer, who filled it with furniture that wasn’t so terribly stiff that people would be afraid to touch it. When it opens, the Francis becomes only one of two stone buildings in Napa that belongs on the National Register of Historic Places. Other touches include two 18th-century limestone fountains in the garden and a salt room. Each room has unique light fixtures (from Murano to Baccarat chandeliers) hand-selected by the Dwyers. thefrancishouse.com
